Fan voting now open through March 4 to help select college hockey’s top player, won by DU’s Will Butcher last year

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – After Denver’s Will Butcher became the first NCHC player to win the Hobey Baker Award last season, fifteen student-athletes from the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) will have a chance to make it a repeat as they are among 74 NCAA Division I players nominated for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, all of whom were revealed Tuesday when fan voting opened to help select college hockey’s top player.

Seven of eight NCHC teams nominated at least one player, led by three nominees each from Denver, Miami and Minnesota Duluth. Colorado College and Omaha have a pair of nominees each, while St. Cloud State and Western Michigan have one nominee a piece. Among the 15 nominees, 12 are forwards and three are defensemen. By class, one is a freshman, six are sophomores, five are juniors and three are seniors. The full list of NCHC nominees is at the bottom.

Presented annually to college hockey’s top player, the Hobey Baker Award opened fan voting for 2018 on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Fans can cast their vote by visiting and viewing all 74 college hockey players representing 46 NCAA Division I schools up for the award.

The first phase of fan balloting runs through March 4. Phase two of fan balloting then begins on March 14, after the Top Ten Hobey Baker finalists are announced. The fans’ vote accounts for one percent of the total ballot in each phase in selecting this year’s award recipient. Fans can learn more about each nominee by clicking on the candidate’s bio on the website.

Award criteria includes candidates exhibiting the exceptional character traits shown by the award’s namesake, Hobey Baker. A legendary American hero, Baker was a World War I fighter pilot and was known as America’s greatest amateur athlete in his day, excelling at hockey and football at Princeton University. Award candidates must demonstrate strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportsmanship, as well.

The 2018 Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced on Friday, April 6, 2018 from a field of three Hobey Hat Trick finalists, first revealed on March 29, during the NCAA Frozen Four Championship in Saint Paul, Minn. The award ceremony will be held at the legendary Roy Wilkens Auditorium in the St. Paul RiverCentre and will be broadcast nationally on NHL Network.
