COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After doubling his season point total in one weekend, Colorado College freshman forward Christiano Versich was recognized nationally for his efforts by being named the NCAA Third Star of the Week, NCAA Hockey revealed Tuesday.
Entering last weekend with five points in 16 games all season, Versich (Kelly Lake, Minn.) tallied five points on a goal and four assists in two games against Arizona State last Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 16-17. He recorded his first collegiate multi-point game with a career-best three points in Saturday’s 4-0 shutout of the Sun Devils, including his first multi-assist outing. He set up CC’s first and fourth goals in the whitewash, the first of which was the game-winner, while striking on the power play for the Tigers’ third goal as he had a hand in three of the four goals in the win. Versich was +2 in the contest and earned Third Star of the Game honors.
A day later, Versich again handed out two assists, the first of which tied the game at 2-2, while his second helper came on the power play and helped put CC in front, 3-2, in an eventual 4-4 tie. After a scoreless overtime, Versich scored the only goal in an exhibition sudden-death shootout, as well. He was tabbed Second Star of the Game on Sunday.
Versich finished the series with a goal, four assists, a +2 plus-minus and five shots on goal, while extending his point streak to a career-long-tying three games. On the season, the draft-eligible forward now has three goals and seven assists for 10 points in 18 games.
Also collecting NCAA Stars of the Week on Tuesday were Robert Morris senior forward Brady Ferguson, who was tabbed First Star, and Bemidji State junior forward Jay Dickman, who nabbed Second Star of the Week.
Versich marks the sixth week an NCHC player has been represented among the NCAA Three Stars of the Week, while he is the eighth NCHC student-athlete to earn an NCAA “Star” this season. St. Cloud State junior defenseman Jimmy Schuldt and Colorado College junior forward Mason Bergh were the first NCHC skaters to garner NCAA Stars for the weekend of Oct. 13-14. Miami sophomore forward Gordie Green garnered First Star honors on Oct. 24 after a seven-point weekend at Maine (Oct. 20-21), while Denver junior forward Troy Terry earned NCAA Third Star of the Week after the Oct. 27-28 weekend. Western Michigan sophomore forward Wade Allison collected First Star honors on Nov. 7 after a four-goal weekend, while Denver senior goalie Tanner Jaillet and St. Cloud State sophomore forward Jake Wahlin were Second and Third Stars, respectively, following the Dec. 1-2 weekend.
Versich and the Tigers return to action Friday, Dec. 29 at crosstown rival Air Force, before hosting Hockey East foe Merrimack on Dec. 30.
