Sophomore forward honored nationally after five-point weekend in sweep of Denver

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – One day after being recognized by the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) as its Offensive Player of the Week, Western Michigan sophomore forward Wade Allison was honored nationally by being named the NCAA First Star of the Week, NCAA Hockey revealed Tuesday.

Allison (Myrtle, Manitoba) powered WMU to a sweep of then-No. 1 Denver, totaling five points in the two wins, including a hat trick. In Friday’s opener, the Philadelphia Flyers draft pick scored the Broncos’ first goal midway through the first period to tie the game, while assisting on the game-winning goal with less than a minute to play in regulation in a 6-5 comeback win.

The next night, Allison erupted for his first collegiate hat trick. Trailing 3-0, he potted WMU’s first two goals in a span of 1:13 late in the second stanza to start a rally, before sending the hats to the ice with his third goal, which came on the power play and made it 6-4 Broncos in an eventual 7-4 victory. He fired five shots on goal, logged a +2 plus-minus and was named the game’s First Star on Saturday. Allison ended the series with four goals, an assist, a +2 plus-minus and six shots on goal.

Also collecting NCAA Stars of the Week were Colgate sophomore goalie Colton Point, who was tabbed Second Star, and Minnesota junior goalie Eric Schierhorn, who nabbed Third Star of the Week.

Allison marks the fourth straight week the NCHC has been represented among the NCAA Three Stars of the Week and the second time an NCHC player has earned First Star this season. Miami sophomore forward Gordie Green garnered First Star honors on Oct. 24 after a seven-point weekend at Maine (Oct. 20-21). Denver junior forward Troy Terry earned NCAA Third Star of the Week last week while St. Cloud State junior defenseman Jimmy Schuldt and Colorado College junior forward Mason Bergh both garnered NCAA Stars for their play Oct. 13-14.

Allison and the No. 18/15 Broncos return to action this weekend when they hit the road for two NCHC games at No. 12/14 Minnesota Duluth. Both games this weekend can be seen on
