COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – With the city of St. Cloud set to host the 12th annual Hockey Day Minnesota on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, as was announced by the Minnesota Wild, FOX Sports North and Minnesota Hockey on Wednesday night, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) has made changes to two conference series for the upcoming 2017-18 season. The changes were made to allow St. Cloud State University to play at home on Jan. 20 and participate in Hockey Day Minnesota.
As part of the Hockey Day Minnesota schedule, also revealed Wednesday night, the Huskies will host in-state and former WCHA rival Minnesota State at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center at 5 p.m. CT. The game will be televised regionally on FOX Sports North PLUS (and streamed on NCHC.tv), as part of FOX Sports North’s Hockey Day Minnesota coverage. SCSU’s game with the Mavericks, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 22, is the back end of a home-and-home series, which starts on Saturday, Oct. 7 in Mankato.
“The NCHC has a strong partnership with FOX Sports North. The ability for one of our member institutions to be featured on FSN while hosting Hockey Day Minnesota in their own city is important to the entire NCHC membership,” NCHC Commissioner Josh Fenton said. “We are excited for the city of St. Cloud to host Hockey Day Minnesota and for SCSU and the NCHC to be a part of it.”
St. Cloud State was slated to play a road conference series at Miami Jan. 19-20, but that series will now take place Feb. 9-10 in Oxford, Ohio. SCSU already had a bye scheduled that weekend. Miami was originally set to play rival Western Michigan Feb. 9-10 in Oxford. That series was also moved, sliding up one weekend, and will now take place Feb. 2-3 in Steve Cady Arena. Both Miami and WMU were scheduled to have byes Feb. 2-3. With the RedHawks’ two series changes, their bye weekend is now Jan. 19-20, while the Broncos off weekend flips to Feb. 9-10.
Hockey Day Minnesota was originated in 2007 by the Minnesota Wild to celebrate the game that has made Minnesota the “State of Hockey.” It is produced in partnership with FOX Sports North, Minnesota Hockey and the respective local community that serves as the host each year. Previous locations include Baudette Bay (2007, 2008), Phalen Park (2009), Hermantown (2010), Moorhead (2011), Minnetonka (2012), Grand Rapids (2013), Elk River (2014), Saint Paul (2015), Duluth (2016) and Stillwater (2017).
