Both conference openers on Friday and all three non-conference games Friday saw a bit of everything. In conference play, one game was a blowout, while the other ended in a tie. In non-conference play, NCHC teams combined to go 1-1-1. In a top-10 NCHC showdown between the last three national champions, No. 7/7 Minnesota Duluth rallied in the third period to tie top-ranked Denver, 3-3, though the Pioneers won the shootout for a two-point night. In the other NCHC opener Friday, No. 10/10 North Dakota erupted for six goals over the first 30 minutes of the game and rolled to a 7-1 win over Miami in Grand Forks to start NCHC play with three points.

In non-conference play, Western Michigan scored twice in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and double up in-state rival Ferris State, 4-2, in the first half of their home-and-home series in Kalamazoo. St. Cloud State held a 3-0 lead, but saw No. 16 Northern Michigan scored three times on a 5-on-3 power play in the third period to force the Huskies to settle for a 3-3 overtime tie. In a top-20 tussle, No. 12/12 Wisconsin held off No. 20 Omaha and added late empty-netters to seal a 5-2 win over the Mavericks in Omaha.

All five series conclude on Saturday night, with the WMU and Ferris State series switching locations to Big Rapids, Mich. Three of the five games Saturday can be seen on, as both conference games – Denver at UMD and Miami at UND – plus the Wisconsin at Omaha game are all available on the NCHC’s digital network.
