GLOUCESTER, Mass. – While the 2017-18 season is getting underway, 49 National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) student-athletes were recognized for their success in the classroom during the 2016-17 school year as they were named All-American Scholars by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA), which announced the new initiative and inaugural 352 men’s Division I honorees earlier this week.
To earn All-American Scholar distinction, a student-athlete must have earned at least a 3.6 grade-point average during the 2016-17 academic year and participated in at least 40 percent of their team’s games a season ago. A small number of waivers to the 40 percent participation requirement were granted due to injury or for back-up goaltenders. A total of 1,310 student-athletes reached the standard throughout NCAA men’s and women’s hockey in the program’s first year.
Omaha led the NCHC with 10 All-American Scholars, followed by nine from Western Michigan and eight from Denver. Colorado College and North Dakota each had seven honorees, while all eight NCHC schools had at least one student-athlete named an All-American Scholar.
The NCHC recognized 174 student-athletes with NCHC Academic All-Conference Team distinction for the 2016-17 season, including 51 freshmen added in July, for compiling a 3.0 cumulative GPA or better. A total of 59 of those student-athletes also garnered NCHC Scholar-Athlete Team distinction for achieving a 3.5 cumulative GPA or better to end last year.
The AHCA has recognized on-ice excellence with its All-America program since 1967, including 23 NCHC student-athletes in the NCHC’s four years of competition.
